How to Become a Poll Worker

Election workers, precinct inspectors and election inspectors – are people who are paid to assist voters and count ballots on Election Day.
To be an election worker, you must be a registered voter of the state. If you are not yet registered to vote but want to serve, you can register to vote online (at Michigan.gov/VoterRegistration) and then sign up. An election worker cannot be a challenger, candidate, member of a candidate's immediate family, or a member of the local Board of Canvassers. Anyone convicted of a felony or an election crime may not serve.

Things to Know Before Filling Out Your Application:

• You will have to declare your political party on the application.
• The application goes to the election board of your precinct for approval and applicant is appointed by the local city/township board.
• A 2-to-4-hour training session is required and provided by  Angie Thompson, County Clerk

• Training must be renewed every two years.
• Poll workers are reimbursed for their time.
• The precinct clerk contacts people who have been approved and  have received training.  
• If your precinct does not need any poll workers for an election and you are open to working in another district where there is a need, clerks will send names and info on to each other.
